Human-Agent Interaction, Social Intelligence, Facilitation, Artificial Intelligence, Science Fiction
In this laboratory, we analyze how human activities can be assisted in a human society with social agents that are recognized by humans as others through system implementation and interpersonal experiments. We will create new agent systems that intervene between people and systems, and explore how artificial systems can support people in the future society.

Our research interest is in the field of human-agent interaction, which is the extension of human society through “social agents,” artificial agents that are received through social channels from the human perspective. The following are the main research themes that exist.
The intelligence to simulate the intentions of others is one of the abilities that humans are best at among many other intellectual abilities, and this understanding of the intentions of others is a major factor in the development of human intelligence, and is also an essential intellectual process in society through social agents. In our laboratory, we are studying such social intelligence mainly through the research of artificial intelligence for interpersonal games with social elements such as cooperating with others and outwitting others.
Humans are influenced in many ways, directly and indirectly, by social agents that have social functions similar to those of humans. There are many variations of these social agents, not only human-like forms, and many of them aim at indirect effects by intervening in the community as well as interactive problem solving methods. In this laboratory, we will create and evaluate systems via such social agents using HCI, VR, and robotics technologies.
New science and technology, including artificial intelligence technology, has been supported by stories, including science fiction. The society in which social agents exist has also been supported by such fictions, and visions have been formulated. In this laboratory, we analyze the power of these stories using information technology, and at the same time, we apply our expertise in both science and humanities to realize research that applies to innovation.
In a world of complex science and technology and a multitude of stakeholders, we need people who can create systems that can be applied to the real world, with knowledge that spans science and technology as well as the humanities. From this perspective, students in the Department of Industrial and System Engineering are expected to have a great impact on the world. In particular, Human-agent interaction is a field that requires knowledge of a variety of fundamental technologies as well as free thinking. Through development and evaluation, I would like you to acquire the ability to organically connect a lot of knowledge, come up with new ideas, and present them.
